Homemade Youngstown Pirohy Recipe

These can be filled with many different fillings. The most popular is a potato cheese filling (mash boiled potatoes and add cheddar or other cheese to taste…I use Velveeta). Other fillings are sweet cabbage, lekvar, apricot, cottage cheese, sauerkraut and many others!)
  1. The first step is to prepare the dough, which is done by mixing 4 cups of flour, an egg and about 1 cup of water together to make a soft dough, as well as a pinch of salt. Knead dough till smooth and not sticky.
  2. Roll dough out to about 1/8 inch thick.
  3. Cut out into circles with a cookie cutter or a drinking glass; you can even cut them into squares depending on what you want for the final shape.
  4. Place a good spoonful of filling in the center and fold in half being careful to make sure the edges seal well
  5. Drop gently into boiling water and cook until they float to the top.
  6. Remove carefully and drain, then add fried butter and onions and serve!

Dobré chut’!
